Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle.”
I know it’s hard – they shouldn’t have pinched your parking space, they shouldn’t have pushed in front of you in the supermarket queue, they shouldn’t have called you names in the street; it just wasn’t right, and it wasn’t nice at all. It’s easy to retaliate, to fight back, to shout out, to criticise and condemn. After all, you’re in the right.
But hold on a second. Just pause. Just wait. Take a deep breath. And another. Count to ten. Count to a hundred if you must. Just think. Just be kind. Take the upper ground and refuse to take offence, refuse to get cross, refuse to retaliate, and refuse to point out the obvious.
Be kind, because everyone you meet is fighting a battle. So, give them a little grace. I know it’s tough – but what they are going through is tougher. You have no idea what battles they have to face today, tomorrow and for the rest of their lives.
The Bible tells us:
Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do. ‘I’ll do the judging,’ says God. ‘I’ll take care of it.'”
Romans 12:17 (MSG)
After all, haven’t you enough of your own battles to take care of, without getting into someone else’s?
