Merriment or Misery?

“I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody worldwide.” — Luke 2:10 (MSG version)

Merry Christmas?

Last week we wished you merry Christmas, and explained a little of what Christmas is truly about – the birth of Christ. You wouldn’t have Christ-mas without Christ, it would just be a ‘mas’ or a mess.

But will it really be a merry Christmas for you? Are you looking ahead to the festivities and the merriment, the brightly coloured lights and the vibrant and colourful decorations; or is your outlook more in greyscale, a dowdy, dreary, monotonous, trudge into more misery?

Believe me, I don’t want to pull you down, but the merriment for some is misery for others.

So let’s encourage them. Let’s recognise it for what it is. Christmas is not a good time for many. It’s been a tough old year. For many it has been lonely, depressing and often scary. Facing Christmas alone, for many, is just more of the same. But there is good news for those many, too.

You’ve heard the saying, “a dog is not just for Christmas.” Well, let’s introduce another: “the Good News is not just for the few.”

Over 2,000 years ago, angels proclaimed the Good News. They said that it was: “a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody worldwide.” Everybody – worldwide! The Good News is not just for the few. It’s for everybody. And the Bible doesn’t say that it “was meant,” it “IS meant.” It’s in the present tense – not the past – it’s for today, just as much as it was for yesterday, and just as much as it will be for tomorrow.

It’s good news today, and it’s good news for you. Whether you are looking ahead in multicolour, or whether you are looking ahead to the Christmas period in monochrome, it’s good news. Whether you feel like it or not, it’s good news. Whether you believe it or not, it’s good news. Whether you understand it or not, it’s good news. Whether you think it’s for you or not, it’s good news – and, yes, it’s for you.

It doesn’t matter if your black, white, yellow, pink, red, purple, blue – whatever colour your skin is right now – it’s for you. It doesn’t matter where you are or where you are from – it’s for you, it’s for everybody worldwide. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Christian, Muslim, Sheik, Hindu, Jehovah, of any faith, or of no faith – it’s for you.

“The great and joyful event is meant for everybody worldwide.” And that includes you. You have a body, and you are in the world – then it’s for you. The Good News is for you.

Whatever kind of Christmas you face, may you know that there is Good News for you.

May you meditate on that fact, and that fact alone – there is Good News for you. Let’s not delve any deeper, let’s just meditate on the fact that there is good news – for you. Turn your thoughts towards that fact over the next few weeks. Whenever you might feel down, or depressed, or sad, or lonely, or whatever negative emotion or feeling you experience, remember that there is good news for you. When the TV brings you news you wish you didn’t have to hear, remember that there is good news for you.

May we pray? Thank You, Lord, that there is good news for me. We ask that you fill our hearts and our minds with this Good News, especially if we struggle with any negative thoughts. And we ask that you turn our misery into merriment this CHRISTmas. We ask this in the precious name of our Saviour, Christ Jesus; Amen.

If you’re looking ahead misery rather than merriment in mind, we would like to pray for you – please get in touch. Don’t feel as though you have to battle alone – there is Good News for you too. May God Bless You.
