The Armour of God

Ephesians 6:11 (NLT) says:

Put on all of God’s armour so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.”

The Armour of God

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

Church Rise Up

Why do we need armour?

We’re in a battle – the battle between good and evil, the battle between the church of God and those that belong to the devil.   Have you ever noticed that there is only one letter difference between God and good; and only one letter difference between devil and evil?

Of course, it’s an unseen battle – we cannot see where the battle lines are drawn – but we, as Christians, know what it is to face a battle.   If you haven’t experienced battles in your Christian life so far, then you have to ask yourself, why not?

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.   Ephesians 6:12 (NLT)

Everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.   2 Timothy 3:12 (NLT)

Stay alert!   Watch out for your great enemy, the devil.   He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.   1 Peter 5:8 (NLT)

Don’t you want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus?   Then you will suffer persecution – you will face battles.   The enemy of your soul – the devil, the evil one – does not want you to live a godly life in Christ Jesus.   He wants to trip you up, he wants to divert you away from the right path, he wants you to turn away from God and towards those things that tempt you away.   All those selfish desires – they will pull you away from your godly life.   And the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking to devour you.

Jesus battled against the devil

Have you ever wondered why Jesus was only tempted by the devil after He was baptised?   Was it because He was somehow hidden from the devil before this?   But as soon as He was baptised, He was exposed – God Himself spoke aloud, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”   (Matthew 3:17 NKJV)

In the next breath, Jesus was taken into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.   Immediately after He was baptised – He was tempted by the devil.   Have you been in a wilderness?   Tempted by the devil?   Jesus shows us the way out.   He battled against the devil using the Sword of the Spirit – the Word of God – He used Scripture.

Whenever you are being tempted by the devil, whenever you face temptation, turn to Scripture – the Sword of the Spirit.

Of course, Jesus was the epitome of truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, and so on – He already was the essence of the other elements of the spiritual armour we must put on to fight the enemy.

And He was fasting – for forty days and forty nights.   Prayer and fasting usually go together – so you can be sure that Jesus prayed too.   Although He was physically affected by fasting – He was hungry – He was strengthened in His Spirit.

Prayer and fasting often precede breakthrough and blessing.   Throughout the whole of the Bible – Old and New Testament – prayer and fasting are described before or during battles that lead to breakthrough.   Moses fasted before he received the Ten Commandments; Nehemiah fasted before asking God for His blessing and favour so that he could re-build the walls of Jerusalem; the disciples fasted before they made important decisions and sending others out to work on God’s behalf.

What breakthrough or blessing do you need in your life?   Then why not spend some time in prayer and fasting – who knows what the results might be!
