Later, Levi invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (There were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.) — Mark 2:15 (NLT)
Who do you share the dinner table with? Family? Friends? Acquaintances? Work colleagues? Saints or sinners? What about the lost, the least, the lonely and the lepers? Do you eat with them? Would you eat with them? Addicts and the abused? What about the abusers? The convicts, the thieves or worse? What about tax collectors?
Now, please forgive me, but I just don’t get it. Yes, I understand that nobody likes tax collectors (sorry, if you are a tax collector, please bear with me!) even today. However, in Jesus’ day they were classed with “disreputable sinners,” and “there were many people of this kind among Jesus’ followers.” And this is the point. There were many disreputable sinners among the followers of Jesus. That was then, and it’s the same today. There are many disreputable sinners who follow Jesus, and I profess to be one!
Would you want to sit and eat with that kind of crowd? And the really challenging question: would you sit and eat with that kind of crowd? Would you? Will you? Jesus would sit and eat with those who He shouldn’t even meet, at least according to the religious leaders of the day. How, on earth, could a Holy God, do just that. In fact, they asked the question:
Why does he eat with such scum?
Excerpt Mark 3:16 (NLT)
That’s our God! That’s our Jesus! The Son of God, who now sits on the throne at the right hand of God Almighty, came down to earth in human form to “eat with such scum.”
And wherever you are today, whatever your life is like, He would come and sit and eat with you too. However unworthy, however undeserving, however lowly; He would come and meet you today. All you have to do is ask, right now, and He will – by the power of His Holy Spirit – come and inhabit your world, to change you from the inside out, to give you life everlasting and a joy today that is unquenchable.
One day, as my pastor has often said, when you get to heaven you will be amazed at who you will meet there! Will you be there? If you’re not sure, get in touch to find out more!
May we pray: Thank You, Lord, that you eat with those who you shouldn’t even meet. Thank You, heavenly Father, that You meet with us today, and all we need to do is invite you to the table. Please come and eat with us today, and by Your Holy Spirit that You provide us with all the Spiritual food and water we need. We ask this in the precious name of our Saviour, Christ Jesus; Amen.
If you need to meet with Jesus, we would like to pray for you – please get in touch. Don’t forget, He accepts the unacceptable, He invites in the left out, He loves the unlovable, reaches the unreachable, and forgives the unforgivable. After all, He met with me one day, didn’t He? May God Bless You.
