“Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.” — George S Patton
Quite often, when you’re asking other people to help you, or you are delegating tasks to other people in your work, it’s so easy to tell them how to do things.
But you will often get better results when you explain what needs to be done, and they will find their own way of doing it. And what will surprise you is that it is probably a far better way than you could ever think of! Even if it’s not a better way for you to do something, it will be a better way for the other person. We all work differently, and if we all have the same end result in mind, we all approach it in different ways. A quick way for you may be much slower for someone else, and vice versa.
So, never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do – and they will surprise you!
