Move the Mountains!

"... if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible." — Excerpt Matthew 17:20 (NLT)

As we continue this series of articles about Jesus, we learn that He moved the mountains. What? He moved mountains – really? Well, figuratively speaking, yes.

Last week we read that Jesus delivered the possessed; He set them free from evil spirits. And in this section of the Bible, Jesus is speaking to His disciples because they had clearly tried to deliver a young boy with seizures from a demon. They wanted to know why they couldn’t cast out the demon. And His answer was:

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

— Matthew 17:20 (NLT)

In Mark’s Gospel, He adds:

“… But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.”

— Excerpt Mark 11:23 (NLT)

Of course, as you will have read over the last few weeks in these articles, we are able to do anything that Jesus could. He has given us the authority, and He has commanded us to teach new disciples to do as He says. So, if Jesus says that we can move mountains, we must believe Him.

But, of course, He will probably have been talking about the mountains we have in our lives, or in the lives of other people. Not physical, geological or geographical mountains; but personal, emotional, physical or spiritual challenges or obstacles; they are the things going on in our lives that make us unhappy, make us ill, or make us dysfunctional. They are hurts, habits, and hang-ups; they are flaws, faults, and failures; they are our mishaps, mistakes, and messes. All of these grow and grow and become mountains in our lives. We cannot get over them, we cannot get around them; but we can move them, in the name of Jesus.

What unsurmountable difficulties do you face in your life today? We need faith, mustard seed sized faith, to move the mountains in our lives.

May we pray: Thank You, Lord, that we can move the mountains in our lives and in the lives of others. Forgive us when we seem to lack the faith to do so; help us realise that nothing is impossible for the LORD, our God. We ask this in the precious name of our Saviour, Christ Jesus; Amen.

If you’re struggling with mountains in your life right now, we would like to pray for you – please get in touch. Don’t feel as though you have to struggle alone. Faith can move the mountains. May God Bless You.
