“The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent.” — 2 Peter 3:9(NLT)
Have you ever had one of those days? When everything seems to be delayed? Maybe you’ve had one or two close together? That has been my recent experience.
Maybe you know those days too, when you get up early, get to where you need to get to, do everything you need to do, and … then, everything goes kind of pear-shaped? When someone changes the goal posts without telling you? When you quickly and efficiently do the things you have always done, expecting the same results … but, for reasons beyond your control, the results are not just wrong, they’re completely missing! It’s as though you hadn’t done anything at all! And you have to start all over again.
Maybe you know those days too, when you get up early, set off early to get to where you need to get to, but all of a sudden, you are delayed? Suddenly, the road you have been travelling along every day for the past few weeks and even years, is suddenly closed and you have to follow a detour. All well and good, but the detour leads to further delays as the traffic is clearly busier than this detour can cope with. Then you get past the detour, and off you go at a more normal pace … until you hit yet another queue of traffic. Quickly, you think, I know another route, and off you go, back to the turn-off for the other route … but that road is closed off too! Things seemingly go from bad to worse as you head off to rejoin the queuing traffic that you were trying to avoid, much further down towards the end of the queue than you were previously.
Eventually, you get to your destination, through all the traffic and delays, the detours and the misdirected directions, and you arrive later than you would have normally, when you expected to be at least an hour earlier than normal!
We all have those days, don’t we? And it got me to thinking – bring back lockdown! Things were a lot easier in lockdown, the roads were quieter, there were less roadworks, less people trying to get to work, less queuing, and getting from A to B was far easier and quicker. Bring back lockdown – just so I can get to where I want to a little bit quicker!! Oh, how thoughtless and self-centred!
As Christians, we often bemoan the fact that we want Jesus to return, and to return quickly! You see, He will return to rule this earth one day, that’s a promise we look forward to. And, of course, we would love to see that happening in our time. Did you get that? In “our” time? Oh, how thoughtless and self-centred!
You see, Jesus Christ, our Lord, is being patient – not for His sake, but for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish. He is giving more time for “everyone” to repent. He wants to see “everyone” saved.
Is that your desire too? That you can, one day, see everyone saved? If that’s the case, why do you want to see Jesus return so soon? Why should we want to see Him return, when there are so many people all around us that don’t believe in Him, don’t have a faith in God or in Christ Jesus? If we truly want Him to return soon, then we had better spend our time sharing our faith and our knowledge of Christ with those who don’t know Him. You see, if our hearts truly belong to Christ, then our hearts will grieve for all those around us who are lost, least and lepers in today’s society. If that’s your heart, let us work together to share the Good News of His Gospel message as widely as we possibly can. Then, and not until then, will He return.
May we pray: Thank You, Lord, that You give time for everyone to repent, to turn to You and to be saved. Help us share the Good News of the Gospel with those who are lost, least and lepers today. We ask this in the precious name of our Saviour, Christ Jesus; Amen.
If you do not have a faith in Christ Jesus and you would like to know more about what it means to be saved – please get in touch. We would love to share the Good News with you. May God Bless You.
